Biography
Citadel + Compagnie
Toronto based, led by Artistic Director Laurence Lemieux, Citadel + Compagnie is known for its creative processes and intimate performances of classic works and new creations. Through remount initiatives, the Compagnie also dedicates itself to the preservation of important Canadian dance work, making available iconic repertoire to new generations of artists and audiences.
Having created over thirty original works, Lemieux continues to explore the extraordinary range of her choreographic voice with works ranging from intimate solos to large scale ensemble works. Described as “a work of elemental courage and restraint” her most recent solo work Anne’s intimate investigation of lineage and belonging has already moved audiences nationally.
James Kudelka, one of Canada’s finest choreographers, served as the company’s resident choreographer from 2008-2020, allowing him to revisit some of his greatest works while making way for challenging new contemporary creations. The Man in Black, one of Kudelka’s most enduring dances set to covers sung by Johnny Cash, serves as an ode to the human spirit, and has taken the company throughout North America, delighting all who have seen it.
Since its foundation in 2000, the Compagnie has toured extensively across Canada and has travelled to Russia, Scotland’s famous Edinburgh Festival, and Vimy, France, as well as major U.S. tours to L.A., Louisiana, Portland, the acclaimed Jacob’s Pillow Festival and was the first Canadian dance company to perform at Battery Dance Festival in New York City.

Citadel + Compagnie is proud to announce the commission of a new work by Montreal-based choreographer Manuel Roque, the Company’s first commission since James Kudelka’s departure in 2020.
The new piece will bring together the Company’s dancers alongside guest artists to form an ensemble of 12 performers.
The creative process began in August 2026 and will continue throughout the 2026/27 season.
Manuel Roque continues his exploration of the contemporary languages of breath and effort through the intersection of kinesthetic virtuosity and genuine theatrical presence, elements he has deeply invested in as a solo performer in recent years.
Eager to apply these principles to an ensemble and engage in a creative process with the Company’s dancers, the work will also reflect on current notions of the human condition, inviting the audience into an open dialogue that is sensitive, authentic, and poetic.
“Today, as a human being, I feel the ambivalence of witnessing a world whose logic and violence I no longer understand, while simultaneously finding the energy and inspiration to respond to it by infusing it with gentleness, kindness, generosity, compassion, and pleasure.”
